Art Journaling Cookie Swap

Cookies, cookies, and more cookies!

We had 9 varieties of edible cookies for our Art Journaling Cookie Swap and 8 varieties of paper cookies. [One person was not able to attend class but wanted to take part in the edible swap.]

Gingerbread cookies, chocolate Andes candies frosted cookies, 2 different sugar cookies, chocolate M&M crinkle cookies, cherry chocolate chip cookies, spice cake butterscotch chip cookies, chocolate sugar cookies, and a orange pineapple pancake cookie (they weren’t supposed to be pancakes…). All of them were super delicious!

I think the chocolate sugar cookie may have been my favorite followed closely by the silvery sugar cookie.  The orange pineapple “pancakes” that I made had awesome flavor but really needed some baking powder. *shakes head at having expired baking powder*

Some people choose to replicate their edible cookie in paper form and others of us went for something completely different. (I’m not 100% sure why I went with green paper for mine?! Certainly unique.) Looking at them now, I’m actually wondering if someone would be able to tell that they are cookies without the context of this post! (With the obvious exception of the chocolate chip looking cookie with the bite taken out of it.)

I love when we’re able to add other’s art work into our journal, especially the Art Journaling class here at Questers’. Many of the people who come are regulars, so having a piece of their art to add to my journals is extra special and meaningful to me.

We don’t have Art Journaling for the next couple weeks, so I will try to come up with some fun and alternate posts.

Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday season, sprinkled with some creativity and lots of joy! 🙂

Art Journaling: Let’s Play Catch Up

The last month has been…busy, to say the least and I wanted to apologize for not posting about our weekly Art Journaling classes. So in today’s post I won’t go into quite as much detail/discussion as usual in an attempt to catch you up to date on what we’ve been doing.

Week 1- our theme was Space and the challenge was to use washi tape.

Week 2- the topic was 10 things about yourself and the challenge was to incorporate use of a stencil into the page.

Week 3- (the week of Thanksgiving) the theme was Thankful/Grateful and for the challenge we took a field trip to Dollar Tree where each person bought a material, medium, or component that we all had to use in the page.  It was a potluck, co-op week.
Our list included
*paper that looked like denim
*bulletin board words
*super shiny wrapping paper
*neon starbursts
*tan label stickers
*sticky border scalloped paper
*purple butterfly-shaped paper
(and there were a couple alternatives: stickers & flowers)

Week 4- the key was zodiac (astrological, Chinese, Celtic, or any combination) and the challenge was to not use any magazines! (Everyone in the class ended up using the astrological zodiac but we did look up their Celtic and Chinese zodiacs as well.)

Week 5- (this most recent Monday: December 10th) I came up with a list of professions, a list of time periods, and list of animals and then had each person roll 3 dice to decide which subject from each list would be the inspiration for their page. The profession and time period acted as the theme with the animal being the challenge to include.
From left to right:
*A futuristic seahorse musician (I didn’t get to finish it, so extra apologies if you can’t see my pencil drawing)
* Artist, Steampunk, horse
* Explorer, Hippie, fish (PHISH)
The class really liked the randomness of the rolling for inspiration so I may come up with a more intense/longer list(s) and do something similar once per semester for the future. (The possibilities of combinations if each roll were a 20-sided die would be awesome… 8,000 possible combinations if you rolled 3 times from 3 different lists!)

I am super excited about this coming week- we are doing a collaborative/ co-op journal page where everyone makes cookies (for the journals AND to eat)! A two-fold cookie swap! I will be sure to post about it!

Maybe these themes and challenges can inspire some pages in your art journal.

Have a wonderful week!
