Art Journaling (Virtual): Keep On Rolling

2 weeks ago we did another roll the dice inspired page. Our dice rolls resulted in a mythical creature, a texture or material, and 2 colors for inspiration. (For example my 4 rolls gave me unicorn, wood, red, and gray.)

I love roll the dice pages (after I’ve come up with our categories, that is). There are so many possibilities and even if everyone rolled the same exact inspirations (though really the odds of that happening are astronomical!) we would still all create vastly different and beautifully unique pages.  ❤

I was extra impressed by the metallic pegasus. The art journalian who created the page printed out an image and then taped it (with double sided tape) to a piece of aluminum foil and then cut the image out! I think that is a very clever idea.

Happy Journaling!

Art Journaling (Virtual): Roll the Dice

This week we did another roll the dice week. Our categories were months, times of day, and objects. Many of us play Dungeons and Dragons, so we have plenty of dice to roll and the art journalians who don’t play still had traditional 6-sided dice to roll. The people who did not have a 12-sided die (for randomly rolling a month) either choose what month they wanted to use, used a random number generator online, or rolled two 6-sided dice (knowing they couldn’t roll January).

Mine (which is the heart in the top middle) was inspired by rolling October, night, and vase.

In case you would like to use these categories, here are our lists within each category.
The months corresponded to their numerical numbers (1=Jan, 2=Feb, etc.).
Objects= vase, mug, hat, dress/ shirt/ any piece of clothing, jewelry/accessory, shoes
Times of day= midnight, dawn, noon, day, night, dusk

Roll the dice weeks are so much fun.

Stay home.
Stay safe.
Be well.
Happy Art Journaling!

Art Journaling: Dice Again

Last week we did another roll the dice evening. We each rolled two 6-sided die (d6) and a 10-sided percentile die (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 00). The percentile die represented a decade for the page. For example, if someone rolled a 40 they could do any decade of the 40’s (the 1840’s, 1940’s, 2040’s, etc) or how their life was (or will be) in their 40’s. The first d6 was used as the overall inspiration for the page (animal, party, building, entertainment, technology, or fashion). The second d6 was a shape that they had to include (heart, star, circle, square, triangle, or polygon with 5 or more sides).

This one really stood out to me this week. This art journalian is about to enter her 30’s and she used that as the basis for her page. I love the Wonder Woman and looking to the future combo.

Our lyric loving art journalian has a very awesome themed journal going on (and manages to incorporate our topics almost every week). Another art journalian has decided to do something similar- instead of using lyrics on every page, she is challenging herself with a specific medium each week- washi tape.

This started a couple of weeks ago, I believe, as a result of her not having her journal with her. She grabbed a square of paper and used washi tape to make the majority of her art. And the next week she did it again and now it is her goal to create her page using washi tape each week. What she rolled for this week’s page was party, circle, and 20’s. I think it’s pretty cool and kind of ambitious. I look forward to seeing what she comes up with in the upcoming weeks.

One of the art journalians rolled building, square, and 80’s. When I said building, she was not immediately thrilled but upon hearing the other parts that she rolled, realized that she had an awesome idea for a page. A tie-in to another creative project that she is working on. Unfortunately, she didn’t have what she needed to do the page with her, so she planned to do it at home. I’m looking forward to seeing how it came out.

I think everyone had fun doing this one. I love roll the dice nights- there are just so many possibilities, even if you only do a couple of categories. The hardest part for me is coming up with the categories and options within each category. Luckily, I have quite a few that I’ve already listed out for the next couple times and I’ve been given an extensive list of other category ideas which I can work on listing out.

Have a wonderful rest of the week! Happy Art Journaling!

Art Journaling: Dice Roll

This week we did another roll the dice class. This time we had 4 categories: place, mythical creatures, colors, and object. For example, if someone rolled all 1s, they would have gotten a renaissance faire, angel/fairy/elf, pink or green, and book. There were a couple grumbles because people were a bit envious of what other people rolled but I think that all of the pages look super cool.

Our lyric and quote art journalian, split her page into quarters and managed to find a lyric for each of the categories. (Cafe, dwarf, black or white, jewelry.) The lyric for dwarf is from the song that the dwarves sing in The Hobbit. I was pretty impressed with her finding one for each of them.

It’s super cool to see what people can come up with when you give them 4 random, unconnected things to work with to create a page.

I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend filled with inspiration.
Happy Art Journaling!

Art Journaling: City of the Future

img_20190916_1933378591467111833813126269.jpg

This week our inspiration for the pages was “city of the future” with the challenge of using something from our bucket of art journaling supplies. (There are a lot of random things in that bucket- colored translucent contact paper, Lisa Frank stickers, bulletin board edging, papers, other stickers, gel pens, fancy edge scissors, and who knows what else.) My only caveat was that using a glue stick from the bucket would not count. I think it added a great variance to the pages and a bit of chance!

I posted a second picture of this one because the group picture had a lot of glare (and I really like it).

What would your city of the future look like? What do you a hope for the future?

Happy journaling

Art Journaling: Game of Chance

img_20190819_2048476845356632326694874408.jpg

In my “Art Journaling: Let’s Play Catch Up” post (way back in December) I mentioned that we rolled dice to come up with our individual page themes one week. And that is what we did again this week with different categories!

I had each art journalian roll 3d6 (aka 3 six-sided dice: the dice you use for most board games) to get three numbers that would randomly choose a pattern, a genre, and a color for their page.

I came up with the lists before the class and numbered them 1-6. (I wonder if I used these same three categories again, if the lists would include the same choices or different choices? There are a ton of pattern possibilities out there and I could have been much more specific with color options as well.) I really do love the classes when we roll the dice because the possibilities are so vast and the categories could be anything. I wonder how the art journalians would feel about doing a few in a row of roll the dice nights. Or maybe they’re better scattered between some of our other nights.

I love this page. It makes me smile. This person ended up with Orange, Polka Dots, and Action (from their dice rolls) to base their page off of. It never would have crossed my mind to make the polka dots into the things doing the action!

This page deserves to be highlighted because it is this person’s first ever art journal page! (Their rolls provided them with Red, Patchwork, and Western for inspiration.) I loved that this new art journalian jumped right in. They found a travel magazine that happened to have plenty of western related words and went to town. I hope they are able to join us more in the future.

The extra cool thing about these types of pages is that something similar can be used as a personal art journal inspiration generator that you could keep in the front or back of your art journal for when you get artist block.
Come up with categories (for example animals, colors, time periods, mediums, patterns, shapes, etc.- the list could really go on and on) and then fill them with choices. You could have more than 3 categories and decide each time how many categories you will use for each individual page. (Maybe you roll on your animal category and get a gorilla and you suddenly have this great idea, you don’t have to roll more since you already have inspiration for a page.) If you have other polyhedral dice besides the d6, you can certainly add more than six options in each category. (How much fun would it be to have 20 options and use a d20 to roll for each category?! Soo many possibilities!)

Take a chance, have some fun, and art journal the night away!
