Art Journaling 10

The key for this week’s Art Journaling quest was patchwork or quilt with an equip of drawing. There was a lot of  room for personal creativity with such an open ended topic.

As a result of such open ended-ness, the class ended up with a couple of Crazy Quilts, a Halloween themed quilt, a mom quilt (which she is going to add photographs to), a heritage quilt, a patterned heart quilt, and a “was going to be a quilt but ended up not being a quilt” page. In case you don’t know, a Crazy Quilt is a quilt made of irregular shaped pieces of fabric (in this case paper) whereas a more traditional quilt is precisely measured and is created using uniform pieces.

This idea was inspired by a page posted in the Art Journaling for Beginners Facebook group that I am in. (I can’t find the photo again to give the specific artist credit for the idea but it was really awesome. *sad face*) The page was an ink heart divided into squares (like a quilt) and then each square had something drawn inside of it. The drawings were in color and there was lovely calligraphy around the outside of the heart.

Safe to say, I was not expecting the quilt pages that the class ended up creating. The Halloween page is probably closest to what I was thinking when I offered up the keys and equip for this week, with individual images contained within squares/ rectangles. Thinking about it now, patterns do speak to a common quilt much more than individual images and it makes a lot of sense that most people choose to incorporate patterns into their quilt or as the entire quilt. The heart quilt I think is my favorite this week because I can picture it being a fabric quilt and being super warm and cozy.

Try it
What does a patchwork/quilt page look like for you? Is your page a bunch of patterned paper cut up into shapes and then arranged to resemble a quilt? Do you create a quilt that tells your life’s story? Maybe your page is a recreation of a quilt your grandmother made? Can you challenge yourself to draw part (or all) of your quilt or add details like the stitching?

I’m sure there’s someone out there who might even take on the challenge of creating a page using needle and thread. There’s nothing saying you couldn’t use fabric to create your page…or you could use fabric to create an entire journal. And how cool would it be if you used quilting and embroidery to create all of your pages in that fabric art journal?!! Wow now I wish I had more knowledge about embroidery and sewing.

Have a wonderful week and schedule some art into your life!
